AbstractThis study aims to determine whether or not the seed distribution system for leafy vegetables in Pathum Thani, Thailand, is effective. Using a structured questionnaire, information was collected from vegetable growers who have grown leafy vegetable on at least 2 rai (0.3 ha) of land year-round for commercial purposes. Seed samples were collected during interviews with respondents. Seed testing was done in laboratory following the rules of The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). The data was analysed by using the Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS). High competition among vegetable seed companies is indicated revealing seed distribution system that can provide seed to vegetable growers at the time they need it. However, they use brands which they realized were of good varietal quality. Most leafy vegetable seeds are imported except for water convolvulus which can be produced domestically and even for export. Most of vegetable growers get seed from seed dealer shops which are closest to their farms at prices which are not significantly different from other dealers within the province. The seed quality testing results show that leafy vegetable seeds are of good quality meeting the minimum standard for seed required by the National Seed Laws of Thailand. Most seeds are sold in can containers. Labeling is incomplete and unclear; vegetable growers cannot determine either variety name or testing date. About half of total respondents checked expiry date before buying seed. However, few vegetable growers check germination percentage of seed before sowing.
