AbstractThis study was conducted (1) to determine seepage and percolation losses in selected farm reservoirs in Thailand using water balance method and quick response percolation meter, (2) to determine some factors affecting the performance of the percolation meter and (3) to evaluate the sealing capacity of soils by compaction in the laboratory. A modified quick response percolation meter and a floating type evaporation meter for use in farm ponds were designed and fabricated. A floating type evaporimeter was also fabricated. Using the quick response percolation meter, measurements revealed a decreasing trend of percolation rate with time and lower values than the water balance method. Compression and suspension/ sedimentation tests were conducted to investigate the decreasing pattern of seepage rates by the quick response percolation method. Seepage rates were found to be a function of depth in the Nong Ya Pong Reservoir and the Agricultural Land and Water Development Program (ALWDP) Reservoir in the Asian Institute of Technology. Evaporation values using the floating type evaporation meter was 0.82 of the Class A pan evaporation meter. Soil compression and suspension/sedimentation were found to be factors influencing the performance of the quick response percolation meter. The transported soil from the Nong Ya Pong Reservoir is adequate to reduce seepage rates since it has a low hydraulic conductivity after compaction at 27 % water content, slightly above optimum water content.
