Abstract | To improve the conventional and empirical earthquake models, the propagation of transient waves is investigated. Transient wave means the wave at wavefronts. First, the solutions of the harmonic waves and the theory of jumps at wavefronts are reviewed. Then, based on them, the speeds and the attenuations are formulated. The results are composed of parameters of medium, i.e., density and Lame's constants. For surface waves, it is logically assumed that the transient wave speeds and material attenuation are proportional to those in the S-wave propagation. The geometric attenuation (radiation) is assumed to be the same as in harmonic vibration. The earthquake models considered so far are empirical, i.e., some parameters in the models have to be assumed empirically. The results from this study should make such models more rational. |
