AbstractA Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) package has been developed as a learning/practicing aid for students of the numerical analysis area of root-finding for non-linear equations. The system called Root-Finding System (RFS), is for use on an IBM PC AT or compatible equipped with the Microsoft Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI) version 3.0. The RFS includes the following methods: (i) Fixed-point iterative method (ii) Bisection method (iii) Regular Falsi method (iv) Newton-Raphson method (v) Secant method (vi) Bairstow's method for polynomials equations All the methods and tools are developed using the Microsoft C Professional Development System (version 6.0) and the Microsoft Windows System Development Kit (MS SDK 3.0). The system is to help students of university level or higher to improve their mathematical skills in root finding by learning important concepts of the methods and applying them in problem-solving and practice. In the practice part, graphical output is obtained easily to help the student interpret the numerical results obtained from calculation. Hence the RFS can assist the student greatly in learning the field.
