AbstractThe diagnosis and maintenance of complex mechanical systems represents a very complex interdisciplinary engineering task. In the domain of maintenance, due to its complexity, the expertise for the knowledge base for maintenance technology is usually the result of the joint effort of a group of experts. The cooperation of several experts each contributing partial solutions from their expertise to solve complex problems is resemble to the concept of blackboard in AI field. A blackboard model knowledge- based prototype was implemented to exploit the degree of maintenance automation. A model-based diagnosis approach was adopted to reduced the searching space. A user-friendly interface was offered to fulfill the whole execution. The machine under consideration was studied from a steel wire manufacture factory near AIT. A classified knowledge was put into knowledge sources. The language used in this prototype is LISP. The program can run either in PC or Sun workstation for the convenience of the user.
