Abstract | Internal migration in Thail and has been taking place for years but it was only in the 60's and 70's when its effects came into focus. Subsequently, much of the understanding of the migration phenomenon came about during the late 70's and the 80's. A surge of interest on migration led to the conduct of relevant studies and researches along this field. However, a bias towards the study of rural-to- urban migration was apparent while the other equally significant pattern - that of rural-torural flow - was largely unnoticed. This study made a comparative analysis of the situation of migrants who settled permanently in two settlements - one in Sablanka Forest Village, Changwat Lopburi and the other in Makkasan Squatter Settlement, Bangkok. Four aspects were examined in this research, namely: physical and environmental condition of the settlements, history and pattern of migration, socioeconomic condition of the households and development potentials of settlements relative to human resource and other factors. The study revealed that the habitability of the forest village is far better in terms of the physical and environmental aspects. The findings noted some similarities and differences in the background, structure and economic condition of the households between the two settlements before and after migration. It was also found out that a strong cooperative spirit exist among the residents which could serve as key to development in the case of Sablanka and to the struggle for survival as a community in the case of Makkasan. An affinity to the area was exhibited by majority of the respondents. They expressed resolve to stay in their respective communities regardless of existing circumstances. Finally , a set of recommendations were advanced relative to migration policies, actions necessary to minimize internal migration and studies on institutional reforms needed to better manage the development process which is expected to have a far ranging impacts on the migration pattern existing in Thailand . |
