Abstract | With the development of livestock industry in the Greater Chaibadan Area, agricultural system has diversified from monoculture to mixed farming. The feeding system has changed from the traditional to a modern way. Commercial feed is used widely for all kinds of livestock. Though the price of feeds is controlled by the government, it is still costly for farmers. Pasture can supplement concentrate feed for cattle but the extent of substitution, especially for milking cows, is limited. Self-processing feed is a way to reduce the cost of animal raising. The study tries to find out whether it is possible for farmers to process animal feed themselves and how their profit margins will be affected by doing so. The analysis shows using self-processed feed is more profitable. The feasibility and constraints for self-processing feed are analyzed. There are many advantages existing in the area to selfprocess feed such as availability of raw materials, institutional support and no or lower transport cost. There are also certain constraints such as technical weakness, unstable supply of some ingredients and storage problem. Recommendations are proposed to overcome the constraints. |
