AbstractThe potential of toxic petroleum waste removal in the caged Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) with cube shape polyurethane foams as Porous Biomass Support System was studied. Pieces of cube shape polyurethane foams (1 * 1 * 1 cm3) were introduced to the caged RBC amount 1080 cubes for each cage. Two laboratory scale of RBC simultaneously at different flow rates 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 m3/m3/d in two runs. fixed on 10 rpm. units were operated at volumetric loading of The rotating velocity was It was found that the removal efficiencies of SCOD were above 70 percent. Oil performances were over 80 percent removal. Ammonia nitrogen removal rates were above 90 percent. Phenol removal rates were found around 90 percent for all of the volumetric loadings. This design showed a little bit better performances than pad shape PU which runned by CHOWDHURY (1990). Inferior media volumes in this study were an advantage of saving cost and caged disc showed easy to replace media.
