Abstract | The present paper reported herein was conducted to study the sources and characteristics of an important urban sewage source, an office wastewater and to evaluate a treatment process consisting of integrated system of BIODISC,ACTIVATED SLUDGE AND WATER HYACINTH. Major wastewater sources were domestic wastewater from office building. The pattern of the wastewater flows was found to be high variable on hourly basis and wastewater quality was classified as to be high nutrient BOD:N:P = 84:23:1. The combined wastewater had an average BOD value of 225 mg/l, COD of 418 mg/l, SS of 151 mg/l. The treatment process of combined Biodisc, Activated Sludge and water hyacinths has been studied in full scale plant. This system consisted of completely mixed biological treatment tank. In which suspended solids were kept in suspension by the rotating drum. The aeration drum was a wheel with pipe with plastic plate inside served as support material for attached growth. The supply of oxygen for the microorganism film and suspended microorganism by rotating the pipe-wheel. In this treatment process, 71 and 90 percent of SCOD and SBOD could be removed, respectively. partial nitrification also be found in bio-tank. It has been demonstrated that the first order specific SBOD removal rate (k) is about 0.037 l/mg VSS.day. In this study, there are some weakness of designing in this treatment plant to be found. (1) aeration disturb settling. ( 2 ) short circuit of raw sewage into settling. (3) shock hydraulic load due to oversize dosing pump and no suitable equalization. In summary, this treatment process is acceptable. The k value are normal in compare to with other activated sludge process. The concentration of oxygen in mixed liquor presented more than adequate. On the maintenance and operational standpoint, this integrated system is no more complex than other activated sludge system and operator attention requirements were minimal. secondly, due to floating force caused by captured air, the mechanical loading was reduced and energy would be saved. |
