Abstract In this study, a overview of cattle and pig slaughterhouse is provided. It includes the world me at production and its changes ; cattle and pig slaughtering, meat processing technologies and equipment; pollution sources and their polluting potential and the waste characteristics. It also inc ludes the current primary and secondary treatment methods for slaughterhouse wastewater. Besides, a special discussion is focused on how to conduct good in- plant management a nd carry out the waste reuse and by- product recovery. Government policy and effluent standards which related with slaughterhouse in different countries are also listed and compared. Based on the existing technology and their application results , some primary and secondary treatment technologies are recommended as the suitable me thods for slaughterhouse wastewater treatment. The advantages and limitations of each methods are described. A case study was conducted for Beijing Huadu meat factory in China. After analysis the pollution problem in this factory, an integrated plan was proposed to improve the management and operation in the factory .
