AbstractLaboratory scale experiments on two - stage anaerobic treatment of an agro-based wastewater with total effluent recycle (TSAT) were conducted to investigate its feasibility and treatment efficiency. TSAT consists of two reactors, the first- stage and second-stage reactors. Pig manure mixed with the anaerobic sludge was the influent of the first- stage reactor. Effluent of the first-stage reactor was the influent of the second-stage reactor was fed back to the first- stage reactor. A preliminary experiment found an appropriate pig manure loading to the first-stage reactor to be 10 kg pig manure/ (m3.d). The organic loading rate (OLR ) of the second- stage reactor were varied at 2, 7, 13 and 20 kg TCOD/ (m3.d). The experimental results indicated even the TSAT was satisfactory for anaerobic digestion of pig manure at the high OLR of 20 kg TCOD/ (m3.d ) ; the volumetric methane production rate (VMPR) was found to be 3.01 m3/ (m3.d ), and the percentages of methane and carbon dioxide contents were 64 - 67 and 33 - 36% (V/V), respectively the TCOD removal efficiencies were observed to increase with increasing OLR, the range being 45-80%.
