AbstractExperiments were carried out using a 126 l and 4 m high modified UASB reactor to study the feasibility of treating low strength (domestic) wastewater using domestic digested seed sludge. The results reveal that an anaerobic treatment such as this process is effective in treating domestic wastewater and is able to maintain a large mass of active microorganisms and effective removal of TSS. The test was covered a period of six months. About 86% COD reduction can be achieved under ambient temperatures condition maintaining a HRT of 8 h and organic loading rate of 1.56 kg COD/m3d. The average methane production during the experimental period amounts to be 128 Nl/kg COD. According to the results obtained, the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater appears to be an attractive proposition for tropical areas. A morphology of the sludge was examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy. This showed high enrichment of microorganisms. Presence of a considerable a mount of polymetric substance excreted by cells appeared to mediate attachment of cell to cell and it is useful for granule formation. Outer part of the sludge contained diverse group of microorganisms where as rode-type methanothrix-like cells prevails in the inner part.
