Abstract | The water pollution scenario in Punjab, Pakistan is aggravating du e to many factors , one of them being industrial pollution which has resulted due to the wanton disposal of industrial wastes into nearby streams, municipal sewers, rivers or creeks by the industries without taking into consideration its deleterious effects on the environment. Water in the vicinity of many industries has been degraded to a dangerous level. Barianwala Drain near Sheikhupura clearly indicates that a very grave situation regarding the discharge of untreated industrial effluents into drains. Wastewater from Lahore is collected in six pumping stations and pumped into River Ravi without any treatment. Extremely deteriorated quality of River Ravi near Lahore is the result of such indiscriminate discharges. The result is that human health is being exposed to danger, aquatic life threatened, crops and plants extensively damaged. From the estimation of pollution loading, it is been found that the most polluting industry in Punjab is the paper and pulp industry. Wastewaters from urban areas are mostly disposed of into rivers. Due to the indiscriminate discbarge of raw sewage into River Chenab and Ravi, severe pollution of these important water sources has occurred. The sewage flow from the urban centers of Punjab is of moderate strength. Low technology in the form of stabilization ponds is feasible for a country like Pakistan, because medium technology did not work properly due to one or other reasons. The 1983 (P.E.P.O) Pakistan Environmental Protection Ordinance has not yet been enforced and powers given under this ordinance have also not been delegated because of socio-political conditions. |
