Abstract | The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of organizational culture and transformational leadership on employee engagement in contractor firms in Myanmar. This study discusses the mediating role of organizational culture for the relationship between transformational leadership and employee engagement. The data is collected by distributing questionnaire to engineers who have at least one year working experience in Myanmar. Altogether, 399 valid questionnaires have been received and used for the analysis purpose. The study found that the dominant culture of medium-sized companies is clan culture whereas hierarchy culture is dominated in large-sized companies. Moreover, the transformational leadership style of managers/supervisors of medium and large-sized companies are different regarding to idealized influence (behavior), inspirational motivation, and intellectual stimulation. The findings from path analysis suggest that transformational leadership has greater influence on employee engagement in large-sized companies than medium-sized companies. According to the results, clan culture and market culture have significant relationship with employee engagement only in large-sized companies. Furthermore, only clan culture and market culture partially mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and employee engagement in large-sized companies. However, organizational culture did not mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and employee engagement in medium-sized companies. |
