Abstract | This study is an investigation on the environmental and social issues related to plastic waste recycling sector in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study covers the plastic recyclers based in the Sadarghat area in Dhaka. City. The key stakeholders considered in this research are the plastic recyclers in the Sadarghat area, who handle or process the plastic waste generated in the capital. While conducting this investigation policy documents, policies and national roadmaps were reviewed to generate strong understanding of the situation in Dhaka. Due to limited data availability, in person data collection was conducted in the Sadarghat area of 17 entities in between April and May 2022. This study provides a unique overview on what is the current situation of plastic waste recycling in the Sadarghat Area. The government of Bangladesh has a focus and vision to reduce plastics from the environment, but due to conflicting agendas and a growing demand of plastic products the plastic waste is only growing. Currently the plastic recycling industry in the country is dominated by informal entities who handle the entire value chain from waste to reusable pellets. As the industry is informal there are no policies or regulators in place who can impose laws or enforce change. The Sadarghat area itself is a high traffic area and is governed by informal unions and leaders who dominate the area with their own rules. This study provides a structured overview and pictorial representation on the current state of plastic recycling in the Sadarghat area in 2022. |
