AbstractA study of a existing cogeneration system in Sunwen Pulp & Paper Mill was performed. Energy and exergy analysis of the components of the cogeneration system was carried out . The system consists of on e boiler of 20t/h r and one 1500 Kw turbo generator for cogeneration . The analysis was done separately for boiler and turbine. The efficiency of boiler for first law was about 69% a nd for the second l aw was about 33% . The efficiency of turbine for the first law was about 95% and for second law was about 71%. Based on the situation of energy consumption in our country and existing energy scene of Sunwen Pulp & Paper Mill, an improved coal fired steam turbine cogeneration system was introduced in this study. Discussions includes two candidates of operation mode, i.e. thermal- match and electrical-match, capital cost and operating economics. If thermal-match operation mode could be adopted, t he mill would have a savings in annual operating cost about 4,460,000 ¥(RMB) relative to the existing s y s t e m. The other major energy conservation measures and another new cogeneration technology, i.e. coal fired air turbine cogeneration system, were a l so given in this study .
