AbstractThis study attempted to evaluate -the efficiencies of the express bus operations in Taipei. In order to make the fruitful comparison, ordinary buses which operate on the simultaneous routes were also selected. Three pairs of bus routes were selected as the study routes. These three pairs were express bus routes no. 212, 292 and their corresponding ordinary services no. 212 and 292 as well as an express Chunghsiao ·route and ordinary bus route no. 504. Information pertaining to bus operations and services such as the bus headways, frequencies, travel time, travel speeds and layover time were collected and analyzed in this study. Results revealed inconsistencies of mean headways on bus routes 212 and 292 on both bus services. Severe bus bunching problems were noticed on all three selected bus routes during survey periods. Discrepancies on the bus layover time were found at both terminals of the three study routes. The travel time observed during the surveys were found to be inconsistent among the three bus routes. With 95% confidence interval, obvious differences on travel time were also found between express and ordinary services, except for Chunghsiao express route and its counterpart, -ordinary bus route no. 504. Results of passenger's attitude survey revealed that express services was only a mere different from ordinary services. This was evident from the passenger ' s opinion that the acceptance of bus services were almost the same between express and ordinary bus. Furthermore, the public opinions toward the fare structures of the two bus services were reasonable and affordable since both services have the same fare structure.
