AbstractA comprehensive review was made in the results of the full-scale instrumented test excavated slopes in the very soft Bangkok clay. A summary was made for the engineering properties of the soil at the test site based on test data reported by the Irrigation Engineering Center (IEC } and CHAVALITJIRAPHAN (1988 ) . The construction history as well as the observed response by the aid of instrumentation of all the test slopes were systematically and concisely summarized and presented in the forms that aid the understanding on the correlation between the responses and construction activities in oder to understand the soil behavior in slope excavation. Stability analyses of the four test slopes were made and the results were compared with the previous predictions made by previous investigators. The comparison of the analyses with the actual response revealed that soil disturbance during soil improvement and excavation was indeed important and needs to be considered in the design . The sand compaction pile method induced detrimental disturbance and did not show any beneficial effect in increasing stability of slope . The FEM analysis (CRISP } , showed a very good prediction on the pattern and changes of water pressure in the clay slope following the staged excavation.
