AbstractThree types of deep excavations are studied in this thesis. They include the sheet piled walls, the jet grouted piled walls and the diaphragm walls. In the case of sheet piled walls, earth pressure computations are needed to estimate the factor of safety on the pile penetration. Additionally, a safety factor of 1.5 is stipulated on the strut load and the basal heave failure. A finite element analysis was done to compute the lateral movements and these values are compared with the measured displacements. Laboratory tests were condu cted to determine the strength of the jet grouted clay and stability analysis was then done to estimate the safety factor for t h e overall stability of these excavations. The lateral movements as observed in three sites with diaphragm walls were compared with the computed values using finite element analysis. The thesis also include comprehensive details on the construction sequence adopted in all the three types of excavations as well as the common geotechnical problems encountered in deep excavations . The sheet piled excavations are of various geometry and shapes. A simple criterion base on basal heave analysis is presented to correlate the damage to adjacent structures as a function of the safety factor.
