AbstractThe secondary or creep settlement behavior of the two test embankments such as vertical drains embankment and mechanical stabilized earth (MSE ) embankment, constructed at the Asia n Institute of Technology (A.IT Campus ) was investigated by using various method such as POULOS & DAVIS (1976) method, RAYMOND & WHALS (1 976) method and Asaoka ' s method . The solution proposed by DAVIS & POULOS (1968) was us e d for estimating the stress distribution caused by these embankment at any he ight of the embankments. The laboratory long term oedometer tests , CKoU triaxial tests, a nd undrained and drained triaxial creep tests were carried out in an attempt to simulate the field stress conditions before and after the construction of the embankments. The calculated values of the immediate , consolidation , the rate of consolidation and creep settlement were used to obtain complete time-settlement curves which were compared with the observation values in the field . The agreement was quite good with respect to ultimate settlements and creep settlement but poor with respect to excess pore pressures. At low stress level, there might be some i n accuracies in pore pressures due to the limitation of laboratory equipments and temperature effects.
