AbstractThis study has attempted to highlight the role of transport, particularly rural roads, in the development process of an area. As a case study, the Mulawin-Tala road network was assessed on the basis of its impact on productivity, marketing and travel patterns of the local residents. The road network has two types of accessibility level, one section was developed while the other was less developed. As a method of analysis, the study t:ded to compare the status of development of the areas covered by these two sections. It was assumed that the area with good road network enjoyed a better status of development than the area with poor transport mechanism. Assessment of the impact of the road network, however, was not an easy task. Other factors such as the geographical and socio- economic could not be ignored in the analysis as they were found to be equally important in the development process of the study area. The presence of these external factors have made this particular impact study rather complex and isolating their effects from the transport factor became difficult. Results of the study indicated the significance of the road transport on the lives of the local people. The study showed higher level of development for the area with good road transport as compared with the area with poor road transport, in terms of productivity, level of input application, pro:f:i1:ability and income as well as volume of traffic. However, .it was also repeatedly noted that there were underlying factors m the parameters used which were distortions to the real impact from the transport mechanism. Nevertheless, this added sp.ke to the study, not only providing a good case for studying the role of the transport network in the process of development but also m highlighting the impact of nontransport factors. This study also revealed that although transport is an important factor for development, .it still has to be integrated with the other economic factors also influencing the development process.
