AbstractThis research is an attempt to propose the appropriate criteria for selection of new settlers for the resettlement programme of the UNDP /FAO Deforestation of Denuded Forest Land in Khao Kho Project, Central Thailand. A field survey was conducted to obtained information from both the existing settlers and the applicants in order to identify the determinants of settlers' success and assess their opinion on criteria for selection of new settlers. Findings from the study revealed that the determinants of success of settlers are the "settlers' own capital", "off-farm income", "family labour fully engaged in agriculture", "age", and "agricultural training" . Analysis of the opinion of respondents on criteria for selection of settlers indicated that the settlers' agricultural background, family labour, and age range between 20-30 years ranked higher than other criteria. It is, proposed that the most important criteria which could be used for selection of new settlers are "agricultural background'', "marrying age 20-30 years", "family agriculture labour force", "education level of Pathom 6", and "residents in the area". It is also recommended that the point system should be applied to the selection of new settlers.
