Abstract | The Municipal Solid Waste Landfill leachate is a high strength organic wastewater containing toxic heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel etc. which contaminates the soil, pollutes groundwater and surface water, eventually posing serious human health hazards by accumulation through food-chain like crop, water, fish etc. So heavy met al removal from landfill leachate has received a lot of attention in recent years. In an attempt to find out a suitable method for removal of heavy metals from landfill leachate, i.e, a cost-effective leachate treatment process, several physical, chemical and biological processes have been investigated in the recent past with results not quite attractive in terms of removal efficiency and economics. With recent advances of membrane technology, membrane processes might be a suitable treatment alternative for removal of heavy metals from leachate. In this study, the treatability of Municipal Solid waste landfill leachate by crossflow microfiltration (CFMF) and ultra-filtration (CFUF) technology were investigated. A comparison of treatment efficiencies by membrane processes and flocculation sedimentation technique was made. |
