AbstractA new extension to "relation", called restricted relation, is introduced. It is a global view of the fragments of a relation in distributed databases. By the representation of restricted relations, a query can be transformed step by step into an optimized form and subqueries are generated which are sent to their corresponding sites. The answer to the query is a collection or a consolidation of subanswers. Query transformation s in a distributed deductive data base is also investigated through four practical cases. It is found that "external functions" to distributed databases do not add to the discuss ion of query transformation. In other words, the discussion of query transformation in distributed databases can be isolated from " external functions". A set of algorithms for query optimization in distributed (deductive) databases has been developed.
