Abstract | The traditional analytical methods of design and analysis have been proven to be inadequate to study the dynamic behavior and complex interactions of modern manufacturing systems. The complexities of these highly integrated systems have caused organizations to turn to simulation for their analyses prior to implementation. The problem undertaken in this study is to achieve such a conceptual integration of simulation and production control systems. Decision making processes are identified for all the hierarchical management planning levels. A decision support system (DSS), integrating simulation and the decision making process is proposed. A three level planning hierarchy is considered for decision making in the organization and the interdependency of decisions at one level with another level is taken into account. The intelligent simulation system (ISS), so developed incorporates three basic modules viz. an intelligent front end (IFE), a simulator, and an intelligent back end (IBE). The Intelligent Front End speeds up the modelling process by taking the system specifications from the user, producing the simulation model in required format and therefore, providing the user with ease of modelling. The simulator simulates the system and in fact, is the heart of the ISS, in the sense that the whole ISS is built around this module. The intelligent back end allows the user to carry out certain type of sensitivity analysis by answering his "What-if" mode questions. A software package is developed for the ISS described above. The simulation language used is SIMAN IV version 1.2, and all other programs are written in MS-FORTRAN version 5.0. Extensive user interface is provided for user friendliness. A detailed user's manual explaining the features of the software is also provided. |
