AbstractThe study concerns with the development of production planning and scheduling models for an automabile parts manufacturing company. The objective of the study is to minimize the relevant operating cost, replace the manual & intuitive procedure and improve the customer's service. New models have been developed to solve a production planning problem that can be described as a multi-item single-level capacitated lot-sizing problem with sequence dependent setup times and identical parallel machines. The solution procedure for this problem is decomposed into 4 steps. The first step is to group products and machines in line under study. A rank order clustering and the capacity planning are used . The second step is to find production lots by using the Wagner and Whit in algorithm. In the third step, the initial monthly plans are achieved through sequencing and scheduling models specially developed for this planning situation. The fourth step improves the plans using an improvement procedure. A comparison is made between the results obtained from the proposed heuristics, the existing production plan and a lower bound. How the models can be practically implemented is also discussed.
