AbstractA strategic planning model for a Thai manufacturing company was developed. Six strategic options were explicitly considered, namely: concentrate in existing business in existing market, diversify existing business to new market, diversify to new business related to existing business within domestic market, diversify to new business unrelated to existing business within domestic market, diversify to new business related to existing business to new market, and diversify to new business unrelated to existing business to new market. Criteria considered important in the decision-making process include growth, profitability, productivity, and social responsibility. Their relative importance was assessed against the background of three scenarios (optimistic, status quo, and pessimistic) each in turn encompassing economic and non-economic determinants that exist within the country as well as those external to it. Analytic Hierarchy Process (ARP) was used in the analysis. Results indicate that the "best" strategy to be pursued by the company is to diversify to new business related to existing business within the domestic market.
