AbstractTuned Mass Damper (TMD) is a mechanical equipment and is used for the suppression of the vibration of structures. The essential natures, which are considered in the control by TMD, are the effectiveness of the control and the sensitivity of the response to the variation ofTMD parameters. Following the classical TMD theory, TMD is a modal-control equipment which is suitable for well-spaced mode control. When closely-spaced mode vibration is considered, there is a limiting value of the natural-frequency spacing ratio to which the classical theory can not be recognized to be effective any more. A new optimization procedure is then proposed for the closely-spaced mode control by single TMD. The proposed procedure shows that the effectiveness of the control is improved from the application of the classical theory. In case of the well-spaced mode control, consideration on the effectiveness and the sensitivity is also made. Two TMD systems, namely double TMD and multiple TMD, are introduced in the study of the effectiveness and the sensitivity. With the same total TMD mass for single TMD, double TMD, and multiple TMD, the results from the application of these three TMD types are compared. Consequently, multiple TMD is proved to be more suitable in application than single TMD and double TMD when the effectiveness and the sensitivity are considered in combination.
