Abstract | This study aims to evaluate the strength, ductility a nd de formability of ferrocement composite columns. The parameters considered are the a mount of wire mesh and core reinforcement. The experimental program was carried out by considering three different amount of wire mesh (2, 4 and 6 layers), variation in core reinforcement (unreinforced, reinforced and hollow), variation in encasement ( mortar , ferrocement, a nd ferrocement with skeletal frame but without mesh) and two different lateral tie spacings (15 cm and 25 cm ). Based on the results obtained, it. is found that composite construction with ferrocement encasement improves the strength, ductility and deformability of a convention a l concrete column (plain or reinforced). With a n increase in the amount of wire mesh, strength and ductility of ferrocement composite with unreinforced core also in crease. However, increase in ductility is more evident than the in crease in the strength . With reinforced core, effect of wire mesh in terms of strength is not significant. The failure pattern of a ferrocement composite is different from that of an ordinary reinforced concrete column. Ferrocement is found to b e both practically and structurally feasible material to be used as permanent formwork for any engineering construction. |
