AbstractFinite element analysis of free oscillation of suspended cables was carried out in order to calculate the dynamic strain. The square linearized dynamic strain is proportional to modal damping of in-plane first symmetric mode for small sag ratios and it shows rather poor correlation for large sag ratios. This relationship was improved in this research by using amplitude of nonlinear dynamic strain instead of linearized dynamic strain and also showed that amp~itude of dynamic strain is equal to linearized dynamic strain for small sag ratios. Theoretical estimation of damping of cables is discussed considering the equivalent damping ratio. Effects of tie cables in cable stay bridges were discussed. It was found that the major role of ties is the reduction of amplitude of oscillation and it also increases the damping slightly.
