AbstractIn this study a simplified mathematical scheme is presented for solving the physical problems in the case of multi-layer saturated porous elastic media. Expressions for physical quantities are derived based on Biot's quasi-static consolidation theory for three dimensional consolidation of the medium. The far field behaviour of displacement components, stress components and excess pore water pressure is investigated for the case of homogeneous full space with a point sink. By applying this analogy to the multilayer case a simplified algorithm is established for the study of physical quantities at far field. A detail numerical analysis is carried out to demonstrate the algorithm with reference to prediction of subsidence at central Bangkok due to ground water pumping from deep wells.
