AbstractA generalized model to assess the thermal performance of any cement industry has been developed. Energy auditing has been carried out in a specific cement plant in Indonesia and the various data obtained from the different units are analyzed by using the developed software. From this simplified mass and energy balance mode l, the kiln system performance and the breakdown of different losses are obtained by using the principle of the first and the second law of Thermodynamics. Thus energy conservation opportunities have been identified, analyzed and recommended. For this particular case, even though the plant management is energy conscious and has already implemented measures for improved system performance, the possible savings from the recommended measures can be at least US $ 80, 000 per year based on the analysis for 1988. Even higher savings are possible by incorporating good energy management measures, especially in the domain of electricity management.
