AbstractThis study aims at investigating the properties of two polymer materials, namely Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and Polypropylene (PP) in the form of mesh, and of the composite obtained by incorporating these materials as reinforcement in cement mortar. The test results showed that PVC mesh did not exhibit any potential as reinforcing material to be used with cement matrix and hence was eliminated at the early stage. Tensile, flexural, impact and creep tests were carried out on cement mortar reinforced with PP grid. It is concluded that the PP grid reinforcement improves the flexural, tensile and impact strength of cement matrix. Increase in tensile and flexural strength is however accompanied by wide cracking which is objectionable in majority of structural applications. The creep deflections of composite material for a stress/strength ratio of 33% are found to be well within specified limits under sustained load up to a loading period of 40 days. The PP grid reinforced cement composite could prove an excellent material for resisting impact loads of structures in corrosive and electromagnetic environment where stray electric currents are to be avoided.
