AbstractA computer model for the simulation of irrigation canal operation was developed based on the Saint Venant equations for unsteady flow in open channel. The governing equations were solved numerically through the finite difference scheme and employing the double sweep technique for the computation. The initial condition is established by assuming a steady flow condition in the canal and determining the required profile by the standard step method. The model can be used to a series of irrigation canal separated by gated structures and with several offakes along its length. It can accurately predict the depth and discharge hydrographs at any point in the system for a given operation scenario. Moreover.it can also compute the gate settings and discharge through the in-line and offtake structures that will produce a minimal flow fluctuations in the canal. The developed model was applied to the Phitsanulok Irrigation System and a good agreement between the observed and simulated values is obtained.
