Abstract | This study has been aimed to establish a general guideline for the derivation of optimal monthly operation policies of an irrigation and hydropower reservoir, that maximize the expected annual energy generation. The developed model used the backward-looking stochastic dynamic programming. Irrigation demand and flood control are used as constraints. The optimal monthly operation policies are expressed in terms of final storage state at the end of each month, as the function of the initial storage state at the beginning of the current month, and the inflow during the current month. The Ubolratana Reservoir in Thailand is selected for the case study. First order (lag one) Markov chain model is assumed to be adequately describe the stochastic nature of inflows to the storage reservoir. The transition probabilities of inflows are estimated from the forecasted inflows. Concerning the forecasted inflows incorporated in SDP, first order Thomas-Fiering model is proposed to tackle the inflows forecasts. The results showed appropriateness ofThomas-Fiering model to fit the stationary inflow series. The simulation of the reservoir system operation is carried out based on the SDP generated optimum policy to evaluate the system performance. Finer discretization of storage volume of reservoir will improve the operation system and avoid the excessive drawdown. Reliability assessment was also carried out to investigate the irrigation and energy demand factors. |
