AbstractThis study has been conducted in two phases: 1. To evaluate the hydraulic performance of canal outlets, 2. To study and to evaluate the economic impact of water course improvement, in the upper chenab canal system of Pakistan. A field study was carried out for the assessment of operation and regulation of the upper chenab canal system. Discharge measurements of 65 outlets were carried out in the selected channels, 13 outlets from each channel of different types. The results indicate that majority of the outlets are tampered. Sanctioned discharge for the outlets was not reaching the outlets located near the tails of distributaries and minors. The distribution of water is done on the basis of a stage discharge relationship. Sedimentation in the channels is creating a change in the surface elevation. A survey was carried out to determine the impact of watercourse improvement on 11 watercourses improved under the On-Farm Water Management Development Project. The results indicate that there is a time saving of 1 hour 33 minutes to irrigate a hectare after watercourse improvement. Cropping intensity has also been increased by 20% after watercourse improvement. Farmers are changing the cropping patterns to grow crops requiring higher amount of water. Additional areas under the major crops were also observed. Increases in yield of major crops with increased supplies of water have been recorded as 26%, 21 %, 22%, and 20% for sugarcane, rice, maize and wheat respectively.
