Abstract | This study is concerned with the optimal design of the main components of an integrated interbasin diversion-reservoir scheme . Generally, interbasin deversion schemes are costly investments. In addition to the conventional cost-benefit analysis, the optimal design of such a system is guided by the reservoir operation policy to be adopted. It is important that future operation policy be studied at the planning stage. A deterministic dynamic programming model has been used to derive the optimal reservoir operation policy using historical monthly inflow sequences. The historical sequences which include the critical flow periods are used as deterministic input. The critical periods influence the system reliability and the vulnerability. At the planning stage of the scheme, the model provides tentative sizes of the scheme's components. The model has been applied in generating alternative sizes of the scheme with different priority levels to irrigation and energy generation . The model used in this study can be generalized to the analysis of the scheme having several objectives. A multi objective compromise programming model has been used to determine the most preferred scheme among several alternatives. The flexibility of the model provides an option to the decision maker in arriving at appropriate choices of the weights and parameters. Sensitivity analysis for compromise programming have been carried out . |
