AbstractA system dynamics model is used to analyze the relationship between foreign capital inflows and the consequent build-up of debt, and economic growth in a developing country like the Philippines. The model incorporates the macrostructure of economic growth, the microstructure of market-clearing mechanisms, and the realistic accounting of money flows. The study shows that in order to achieve tolerable debt-servicing payments, the economy should become capital-intensive. At the same time, investment is encouraged by decreasing taxes and demand expanded by increasing government spending and promoting exports. Domestic resources should be augmented by foreign capital inflows. The resulting economic take-off supports high debt servicing which eventually decreases debt levels and, ultimately, dependence on foreign capital inflows. Further researches, however, should be considered more seriously to corroborate these findings.
