AbstractThis study presents the development and the implementation of a production planning and scheduling model for the tire building department of a tire manufacturing company. In this study, the various product demands are treated as deterministic and time varying (dynamic) over a finite planning horizon, such as that generated from a material requirements planning (MRP) system. The general objective of the study is to improve the existing planning and scheduling algorithm. The solution procedure for this problem are divided into three parts. Firstly, the original problem is transformed into independent subproblems by considering the machine-product compatibility matrix. Secondly, the production lots for each subproblem are determined by formulating each subproblem as a one machine capacitated dynamic lot sizing problem. The mathematical programming model is developed, and solved by Integer Linear Programming package on mainframe computer. Finally, a heuristic algorithm is developed and applied to determine the production sequence for each job on each machine. Computational results for real-life data are presented. The results obtained from the proposed solution are compared with the existing intuitive way of planning and scheduling. Though the model is presented with some computational results, emphasis is made on how the model was developed and implemented.
