AbstractUsually in batch production, for not only Just-in-Time system but also other Push and Pull systems, lot-sizing models do not definitely consider costs of large lead time or cycle time. In Just- in-Time production system controlling of production lead time is one of the most important aspects. There are two conventional ways to control production ordering process in Kanban system: fixed quantity production (FQP) and fixed interval production (FIP). In this paper, the relation s hip between lot-size and lead time or cycle time in a batch production system controlled by FQP and FIP is investigated. The lead time of fixed quantity production system is formulated as a queuing model. The cycle time of fixed interval production can be explained as an economic lot scheduling problem (ELSP). Mathematical models, which can explain this relationship of lot-size and lead time, are formulated for s ingle stage production system. The model for multistage production system is developed based on single stage model and some properties of an optima l multistage production plan. The models for single stage production can obtain the optimal solutions. But, for multistage case, the models are too complicated to be solved for optimal solution, therefore, two heuristics are proposed. By using proposed solving procedures and heuristics, the models are tested with numerical examples. Performance analysis of those models suggests the situation which suits FQP or FIP.
