AbstractThis study is carried out in order to obtain an efficient production plan for a battery factory. The problem is a multi-level multi-item multi-machine capacitated lot-sizing problem. The simple plant location problem (SPLP) model is selected to represent the problem and to solve it by mathematical programming. It is solved by XA package (mixed integer programming (MIP) solver ) on a PC. The formatting program of XA package is written in Pascal in order to get rid of the cumbersome job of entering input data. The problem is solved in two steps in order to reduce computation time. The first step is solving two-level multi-item multi-machine capacitated lot-sizing problem. The second step is calculation of the production quantity of the other stages to meet the requirements of successive stages. The results of experiments confirm the advantage of the SPLP formulation as Gelders et al. have already discussed in this paper. Two heuristics are developed. The expected cost saving of using the proposed methodology for the low demand period (January-October) and the high demand period (November-December) is 2% and 5% respectively . Since an error of sales forecast exists, a simulation is carried out in order to find out a suitable safety stock and possible discount strategies for customers in order to improve sales forecasts. The simulation program is written in Fortran and run on a mainframe.
