AbstractA Batch type torrefactor having a capacity of 0 .113 m3 was designed and fabricated. Torrefaction of sawdust briquettes and wood chips (about 1 inch cube ) was carried out to study the effect of duration time and temperature on yield , proximate analysis and gross calorific value. The weight and energy loss for torrefaction of saw dust briquettes was found to range from 6.2% to 29.7% and 4.6% to 21.0% respectively , for 2-4 hours residence time. For wood chips these losses were 16 . 7% to 33.3% and 10 . 4% to 23.5% , for 2-3 hours residence time. In both cases, percent weight losses were more than energy losses. Also, the torrefied and untorrefied briquettes and charcoal were gasified in a downdraft wood/charcoal gasifier to study the gasification characteristics. Th e gasification of untorrefied and torrefied briquettes were comparable to wood gasification. No significant difference in gas composition was noticed for torrefied briquette gasification while torrefied briquettes disintegrate less than unterrified briquettes after gasification. A rotary drum heater was designed , fabricated and operated with sun-dried sawdust to study the heating performance. Also, the heater was coupled to a briquetting machine to study the effect of pre -heating on energy consumption for briquetting sawdust. The energy saving with preheating were: at 400°C die temperature , 39.01% for motor & 25.68% for total power consumption and at 350°C die temperature, 36.07% for motor & 30.23% for total power consumption. A vertical electrical heater was also designed and fabricated and operated with sun- dried rice husk and peanut shell to study the technical feasibility and heating performance.
