AbstractA deep underground excavation in h ard rock results in subs t antial energy c h a nges. It is interesting to observe the inf lu ence of these e n ergy c ha nges on the potential for rockbursting . This study aims at a correlative study of this phenomenon. The various associated aspects are studi ed in detail . Some ori ginal re lations hips are developed to account for the potential e n ergy change , based on t h e concept of precursor time interval an d inclusion zone theory of fail ure . Also the seismic energy released during a rockburst or when an excavation i s enlarged is calculated u til ising plane strain conditions and the proposed an alysis is s hown to agree reasonably well with t h e findings of other investigators (Salamon , 1983) .
