AbstractA reversible cage wheel with flat retractable lugs was developed to provide facility for road transportation and to improve performance in wet land operations. A pair of wheels were constructed after testing first wheel and implementing necessary modifications. The developed wheel had hinged , sw.i.ngi. ng t.yr>e flat lugs, by which the outer dia meters ac h ieved were 100 millimeters greater than the tyre when expanded and 100 millimeters smaller when retracted. Wheel were compared with high lugged tyre and tyre with conventional cage wheel in five soil conditions. In all four wet soil conditions the developed cage wheel exerted more than two times of drawbar pull and power over high lugged tyre and 1. 5 times over conventional cage wheel. For dry soil condition wheel exerted 1. 4 times pull and 1.1 times power over t y re and 1. 1 times pull and more than one times power over conventional cage wheel. The designed cage wheel was performed well in both road and field. Reversibility without bogging down with flat lugs was the most important characteristic obtained. This was the first step in this swinging lug concept, and there are number of ways to develop this wheel furthermore using the same retracting principle .
