Abstract | Quality inspection is an important function in the Quality
Assurance program of any paper company. The usual practice is to
inspect the quality at the jumbo reel, after which the jumbo reel
is cut into different sizes and wound onto smaller rolls. The
load which is applied on the paper at that time causes quality of
paper to drop. The paper after this winding process is the final
product of the mill and is delivered to the customers.
Nevertheless, there is no more inspection done on the paper at
this final step. Hence, there is more likelihood of a bad quality
paper being shipped to a customer.
To improve the quality assurance, a two stage inspection
plan is suggested in this study. The first stage of inspection,
done at every jumbo reel, follows the existing inspection system.
The second stage of inspection is to be carried out at some small
rolls by using the proposed sampling plan.
A total quality cost model is developed to determine the
optimum sampling plan for the second stage. This model is
modified from Schmidt and Bennett' model which is presented for
economic multiattribute acceptance sampling plan. Optimization of
the model is achieved through the pattern search technique. A
computer program is developed to find the solution. The results
show that the proposed inspection system can reduce the current
total quality cost besides improving the customer satisfaction.
Sensitivity of the optimum plans and total expected cost to the
cost coefficients is investigated. |
