AbstractThe demand for irrigation water at different times of the year is dependent upon the crops grown. In order that crop selection decisions be objective and reproducible, agricultural land capability should be taken into consideration. The estimation of irrigation water requirements is a tedious procedure when done manually, and the possibility of error is great. Therefore, it is generally not feasible to explore the effect of different cropping patterns on irrigation water requirements. Seeking to address these problems, this study demonstrates the use pf raster-based Geographical Information Systems (GISs) for agricultural land capability studies, and of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for production of thematic maps from point data. GIS techniques were also used to determine the predominant physical characteristics affecting irrigation requirements, within discrete irrigation boundaries, and for determining groundwater depths and flood zones. A combination of factual and assumed data was used in this study. Also part of the study is the development of the computer program WATDEM, written in 'C', for estimating the water requirements at withdrawal points in an irrigation system, which can be used to rapidly and accurately explore several operational scenarios.
