AbstractInteractive microcomputer programs have been developed in this thesis, which may be used in designing an irrigation system. Typical irrigation system design consists of concrete-lined and grass- lined open channels with various structures. First a layout of the canal is designed along the ridge line based upon the topographic map and other site conditions. After computing the command areas at different locations the design capacity of the system is obtained based on crops and crop water requirement data. Location, type and basic features of hydraulic structures are also indicated by the program. The canal system is designed based on the established principles. The procedure d eve loped in this thesis has been tested using the data of the Klong Tron Irrigation Project in Northern Thailand. It is observed that the computer generated designs are relatively comparable to the previously developed design. After finalizing the layout and designing of the canal system, its adequacy in checked for operating conditions. This is done by computing the water surface profiles under steady but nonuniform flow conditions. Efforts have been made to develop several databases which can be edited by the user. The computer programs are written in Microsoft QuickBASIC and the databases are linked and executed interactively by menu driven systems. This allows a user to develop and test several alternative designs in a personal computer.
