AbstractThe pollution problem of klong water in the city of Bangkok creates a lot of impacts to the citizens living along the klongs. The impacts of obnoxious odour, the source of diseases and ecology are some of the major ones. There are several ways to alleviate this problem, but the most economical way is by using the high water level of the Chao Phraya River during high tide together with the properly operation of gates along the Chao Phraya Riverbank and if necessary, the pumps may be incorporated. This approach is the mean of using the flow velocity to convect the pollutant from the klongs to the Chao Phraya River and the efficiency of the flushing system is investigated in this study. To simulate the various operation plans of gate and pump operation, the mathematical models are used. First, the hydrodynamic model is applied to obtain the flow characteristics for various operation plans. Then the results from the first model are input into the water quality model to obtain the pollution distribution for each operation plan. From the various proposed plans, it is found that only gate operation is not sufficient to flush the pollutant out until the water quality reaches the target standard due to flat topography and huge amount of waste discharged from households. To obtain the acceptable water quality the pumps have to be incorporated by pumping water into the klongs for some certain amount during period of low tide.
