AbstractAn experiment on catfish (hybrid of Clarias Macrocepharus x Clarias Gariepinus) culture integrated and non-integrated with tilapia was conducted in concrete tank with and without mud lined on the bottom. The effects of mud on nutrient cycling from catfish wastes and water quality were investigated. Results show that 56 % of nitrogen (N), 60 % of phosphorus (P) and 68 % of organic carbon from feed were released to the tank. Considerable amount of nitrogen (22 % N) remained in the water as phytoplankton biomass, which were died off and accumulated in the sediment. Compare to 3 % nitrogen were recovered from mud bottom tank and hightest lost of nitrogen unaccounted, presumably through denitrification and diffusion of ammonia. Highest amount of phosphorus (20-30 % P) were recovered at the bottom of the tank and tend to release back to water column. Twenty percent organic carbon (C) were accumulated in the sediment compare to only 2-3 % C were increase in the mud, which decomposition of organic matter were occurred. Tilapia production in tank without mud bottom was 0.23 kg/m3/3 months which was not significantly higher than the production from mud bottom tank (0.19 kg/m3/3 months). However, water quality in tanks without bottom muds tended to be poor and caused decrease in daily weight gain of tilapia from 1.4 to 0.8 g/fish/day and specific growth rate from 2.5 to 0.6 % /day of catfish in the last two weeks of the experimental period.
