AbstractTwo 2x2 factorial experiments we re conducted in outdoor concrete tanks for 8 weeks each with additional plastic baffles and bamboo poles substrate to increase the surface area for the attachment of micro-organisms . Feeding of attached microorganisms by Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and, feeding competition with substrate grazer fresh water snail Viviparu s were studied. Nile tilapia raised in "baffl es " and "no baffles" systems did not show singnificant difference in growth and production . Assessment of attached microorganism biomass showed significantly higher {p < . 05 ) ash free dry weight (AFDW ) in "no fish " system compared to " fish " system . Analysis of attached microorganism biomass composition and stomach contents of tilapia showed similar composition. Expt. 2 also showed significantly higher attached biomass in " no fish and baffles " than in " fish and baffles" treatment indicating the feeding of Nile tilapia on attached biomass. Fish tanks with "bamboo " showed higher growth and production than in fish tanks with plastic " baffles " . Nil e tilapia polyculture with fresh water s nails resulted the competition index 22.9% . Although fish growth obtained was not significantly different in system with additional substrate compared to without substrate system in experiment 1, there was ample support to believe that the feeding habit of Nile tilapia includes attached microorganisms.
